Ch. 11, Note 85: Evangelist Portraits in the Ostromir Gospel

In the portrait of John, the evangelist sits writing his gospel on the left with furniture and equipment on his right. In the centre the evangelist stands facing upwards to receive the text of his gospel held between the claws of a descending eagle. Above the image a lion prowls. The artist has included both the Irenaean and the Jerome-inspired versions of the evangelist symbols.

The evangelist Mark, still with his book and pen in hand, receives his gospel from the lion above.

The evangelist Luke rises from his writing desk to receive his gospel from a calf.
