Ch. 11, Note 81: Archiepiscopal Chapel, Ravenna


Four standing angels uphold the christogram, symbol of the enthroned Christ. In the spaces between them are located the cherubim or “four living creatures” of Revelation 4, now clearly associated with gospel books.

The winged human figure faces the eagle (below), suggesting that priority is given to gospels ascribed to apostles (Matthew and John) over those ascribed to followers of apostles (Mark and Luke).

The Markan lion follows the Johannine eagle; the Lucan calf (below) follows the Matthean human.
